Are you a model looking to start or improve your portfolio? Please take a look at my FAQ below and Contact Me if you are interested in setting up a session.

How do you work with models?

There are three ways a photographer works with a model: The model gets paid by the photographer or client; The model pays the photographer; The model and photographer work together for trade or TFP.

Unless a client is paying for a particular shoot, or I am in need of a very specific look, I rarely pay for a model. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t money in modeling, but most of my work is shooting for royalty free stock, so the opportunity for a paid model shoot is rare.

If a model is in need of particular shots or a comp card, I will often do a session for a fee. This is structured similar to my fees on my portrait page, and are listed below. In addition, I will give a 20% discount if I think I can use the images for stock and the model(s) will sign a model release.

The third type of session is Trade for Print or TFP.

What Is TFP?

TFP stands for Trade for Print. Most TFP shoots are delivered to the on a CD, so it also called TFCD. In a TFP shoot the model and I work together to produce something we both can use. No money is exchanged for a TFP session. I do a limited amount of TFP work in order to build my portfolio, add to my stock collection, and/or to meet new models on which to build a relationship.

The model provides their time and skill as a model, and I provide my skill as a photographer and processor. Together we collaborate to create a specified set of photographs. This will result in a set of images that we both can use.

When the shoot is done and I have time to process them I will provide the model with a selection of images on a CD suitable for printing. I will also provide a limited release to allow the model to use the images in their promotional materials. Unless arranged in advance the model does not receive commercial rights to images created in a TFP shoot and all copyrights to the images are wholly owned by the me. If the model requires all or commercial rights then normal studio rates apply. See below for these prices.

All TFP shoots require the model my Model Release. This release gives me the right to distribute images created in a TFP session as Royalty Free Images. Email me for more details and a copy of my model release.

What is Royalty Free?

Royalty Free Stock Photography is a where the purchaser pays a one time license fee to use an image and does not have to pay any additional royalty for repeated use of the images. The buyer doesn’t buy the rights, but a license to use the images without further payment. This is usually done through an agency that keeps a percentage of the price for representation. The actual amount to the photography is usually minimal, (as little as .20) if it sells at all, and this market only becomes lucrative at high volume. For this reason, I never pay for TFP images, although I will offer a discount on paid studio shoots with a signed model release.

When Will I get My TFP Photos?

My standard turnaround is 3-4 weeks after the shoot to deliver the final disc of images. You will get a minimum of 5 shots unless otherwise agreed to. I will also put the images on a page on my website for viewing or downloading for short period of time. This can be a public or a private page depending on your wishes. If you want me to host a page of your images for an extended period of time with contact info, this is also a service I can provide at cost. Additional images or prints can be purchased as desired.

What Else?

Other details will vary by shoot and I am happy to discuss details in advance. Sessions can be at your location, or at a public place. Typically, I like to wait until I have a group of TFP models to shoot at one time to make it more practical, but am always willing to discuss exceptions. The model will need to provide wardrobe changes, make-up artists, hair stylists, etc. You are encouraged to bring any props you would like in the shot. Please feel free to bring a friend or significant other if this makes you more comfortable. Who knows, we may use them in a shot or two.
